Tourism information

The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador will send you current travel information by calling 1 800 563 6353. Please mention that you are coming to the Pouch Cove Foundation. More information is on line at http://www.wordplay.com

Canada Customs

When entering Canada please tell the Customs and Immigration Officer that you are a tourist coming on holiday. It is the simpliest and most direct response. In the past artists who have stated that they are coming for a residency have confused officials who think that the individual is applying for residency in Canada which is a long and involved process.

Air Travel

Continental Airlines flies from Newark, NJ to St. John’s daily. Air Canada and Westjet fly from Toronto, Montreal and Halifax daily, and there are some charters that provide service too.

The Foundation endeavors to provide transportation for visiting artists from the airport to Pouch Cove when flights arrive during the business day.

If artists’ flights arrive after-hours, taxis are available from the airport departure gate. Taxi fare from the airport to the Foundation is approximately $40 dollars Canadian.

Ground Travel

The Marine Atlantic ferry has a six hour sailing from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland daily, check them for schedule and availability.

We recommend that you take the night ferry which allows you to sleep on the ferry arriving at 7 am for the ten hour drive across the island.

From mid June through mid September Marine Atlantic also offers a Seventeen hour crossing from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Argentia, Newfoundland, which then leaves a three hour drive to Pouch Cove.

We would actively discourage artists from taking the bus as there is no express service and it makes frequent stops as a consequence.

Car rental

Having a car is not a necessity while in residence. Usually at least one of the six residence artists has driven to Newfoundland and cooperates for drives to the grocery store etc. if others will assist with the gas.

If you plan to tour the east coast of the island we suggest connecting with other residents to share a vehicle for specific periods rather than paying for a vehicle parked outside the studio.

If you are planning to tour the island please do your research, the place is larger than most realize.

Unless you have a corporate or university plan it has been our experience that the least expensive car renters in St. John’s are Enterprise Rent a Car and Rent a Wreck.

Unlike large cities the numbers of vehicles available for rent in the summer are not unlimited, book early.

Art Supplies

It is highly recommended that artists ship required materials ahead of their residency as local supplies are limited and expensive. Allow three weeks for shipment from the United States.

European and Asian artists should order their supplies from a Toronto, Ontario supplier like Tern Art Supplies, Aboveground Art Supplies, Gwartzman’s Art Supplies, allow two weeks for delivery.

Stretchers can be made to order from Garreth Gautier, Image Fusion, in St. John’s, 709-745-6663

If you are shipping packages or crates in advance of a residency, please declare minimum value on insurance and customs forms.

Please note that what you are shipping is for personal use and/or
personal belongings which generally are not taxable.

There is a 14% tax on incoming goods in the event you are taxed, though this amount is refundable on exit by submission of a claim.

Phone

Phone company cell phone service is available, Rogers Cable cell phones do not work in Pouch Cove.

Internet

High Speed wireless internet is available free of charge.

Friends, Family, Pets

The program is designed to provide individual artists with a place to work.

If spouses, or partners are also creative people who are able to share the live/work space provided to the invited artist the Foundation is prepared to entertain their presence for the duration of the residency through a specific request.

Otherwise, spouses or partners and family would be limited to the first and/or last week of the residency and again only if able to share the resident’s space. We can recommend B&B accommodation in Pouch Cove as an alternative.

The Foundation is willing to allow pets on a case by case basis and in consultation with the other artists in residence.

Shared Facilities

The washrooms, laundry facility and eating and dining areas are communal. We would request that residents clean up after themselves during their stay and be cooperative with others concerns and needs.

Most of the residents have fallen into a pattern of sharing meals in the evening and fending for themselves for the rest of the day. Each residency is different and defined by the artists themselves.
